How To Grow Onions At Home

Onions come in different varieties, including short-day, intermediate-day, and long-day onions.

Choose the type of onion that is best suited for your region and planting season. Short-day onions are best for southern regions

Onions prefer well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Work in some compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and texture.

Plant onion sets or seeds in rows that are about one foot apart. Onion sets are small, immature onions that have been grown for a year

Onions thrive in cool weather with moderate moisture. Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Mulch with straw or leaves to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Onions do not tolerate competition from other plants, so keep the area around them free from weeds.

Onions benefit from regular fertilization. Use a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
